Blocking effect is a specific type of artifact that results from block-based processing or compression (like e.g. JPEG), where blocks of image pixels are treated independently and thus affected by different amounts of distortion. In this exercise, blocking is produced artificially, without the usually co-occurrent blurring and ringing.
