Image quantization

Quantization of sample values yields shorter wordlengths of binary representations thus reducing total volume of visual data.

Scalar quantization:

Sample values in each image component are quantized according to a certain rule. In a color image, each component is quantized independently using its own quantization rule. This rule may depend on local image characteristics (adaptive quantization).
